trying to find a birth record
« on: Monday 16 April 07 20:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Can anyone help me? I'm trying to find the birth record of Eliza Mary A Whitaker in NS, Canada in about 1859. I'm assuming this is Nova Scotia. I can't find a freebmd type site for Canada, and I'm wondering if anyone else would have access to these records. I would love to know who her parents were.
Thanks in anticipation
Erin :)

Hi Erin,

Each province runs their own BMD system, so the availability of records differs across the country.  NS would indeed be Nova Scotia, but I think 1859 is too early for their civil registration.  Here is their BMD site:

You might also be interested in the Nova Scotia Genweb - it may have some hints for looking for earlier records.

I've done a lot of research in Nova Scotia but have known where family lived before I started.
Where would she have been in 1881? There is lots of information online- cemeteries, church records, genealogies, etc.- but do you have any idea of area she might have been from?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Couldn't find any Whitakers/Whittakers in N.S. in 1901 Census (was trying to see what area in N.S. they might be found) but lots in N.B. and other provinces.

Thanks for looking aghadowey, she was actually in England by 1881, but I don't know about her parents (whom I've just realised I do have the names for hidden away on my auntie's tree  ::) )  William Whitaker born 1838 and his wife Eleanor, who I don't have a maiden name for. I don't know their birthplaces either, I'm afraid.
Thanks for all your efforts
Erin :)

Thanks for checking, aghadowey, I've done some further digging and found that she actually came to England with her parents before 1871. Her parents were also born in England so it may be that they were just visiting Canada when Eliza was born. Thanks for all your help  :)
