Smith, James (Bn 1858, Dumfries)
« on: Tuesday 17 April 07 02:12 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find any (& All) Info on James SMITH (Bn 14th April 1858, Dumfries) & Family (for a Totally Technophobic friend)!

I have a copy of James Birth Record (from scotlandspeople website), in which it states that His Parents were: Andrew SMITH & Helen Leona SMITH (nee PHILLIP).

The thing is I can't read the Parish name, It looks like 'Grailney'(?), Dumfries, could this be 'GRETNA' (which is where James said He was Born on later Census Returns in Liverpool).

I even tried Viewing the Image Blown Up (with Irfanview), does'nt Help! :-\

Also, I tried to find this Family Group on the 1861 Census, 10 Possibles came Up, I ran out of Credits after checking 2 of them (neither of which showed the Right Family).

The 2 I looked at were:
1861   SMITH   JAMES   M   3   DUMFRIES   /DUMFRIES   821/00 024/00 013
1861   SMITH   JAMES   M   3   ESKDALEMUIR   /DUMFRIES   824/00 003/00 001

Hi Pegassus

I feel a sad story coming on... :'(

I think Helen Phillip may have died around the time of James's birth. There is this entry on SP for a death:

1858   SMITH   HELEN   HASTIE   PHILLIPS   F   38   GRETNA   /DUMFRIES   827/00 0013

This may be James with father and a new 'wife' (I'm not seeing any marriage as yet) for Andrew in 1861:

Andrew Smith    43, butcher, b. St Gue Mion (?spl), Dumfriesshire
Margret Smith    26, b. Cannonbie
Andrew Smith    3, b. England
James Smith    2, b. Gretna
Robert W Smith    8 Mths, b. Half Morton

Address: Corries Mill, Half Morton

There is a birth entry on IGI for baby Robert above:

ROBERT WRIGHT SMITH   Birth: 08 SEP 1860 Halfmorton, Dumfries, Scotland
Parents: Andrew Smith and Margaret Beattie

Regards.

Monica  :)

Hiya,

Just to explain your "Grailney".

It will say Graitney which is an alternative name for Gretna. Though Old Graitney lies some 10 miles from Gretna of today.
