BUXTON
« on: Tuesday 17 April 07 20:33 BST (UK) »
I'm interested in finding out about the earliest arrivals in South Africa of the Buxton family. Known names are Amyott Cecil Frederick Buxton, born 1906, his father Amyott George Clay Buxton and his grandfather, thought to be Amyott George Frederick Buxton.

Amyott Cecil was born in the Cape.

The family appears to have orginated in Derbyshire, England, perhaps as long ago as the 1850s.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Thimble

Hi Thimble

Have you tried searching the National Archives for references? http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl
Choose the RSA database as it searches all databases listed on that page.

The files held in the Archive are generally deceased estates and will hold information on the occupation, spouse, parents names, children, place & date of death, etc.  Depending on the file, it may have a copy of the will, death certificate & liquidation & distribution accounts.

A quick look found :

You will need to play around with the search options to find the files as you will see from the above, there are variables on the name Amyott.

It will be worth your while to get digital pics of these death Notices.  It is really the main research tool in South Africa.  No FreeBmb here....  :(

Hi Thimble,

I too am very interested in this family branch and can give you significant amount of information. Are you a family member?

This family does not come from Derbyshire; they come from Coggeshall in Essex, England and trace their lineage back to the 16th century.

Please get in touch with me.

Best regards
Peter

hello peter [pbux001]
I have a connection to the Buxton family via Jane Clay who married my ancestor Charles Edmonds.
I would love to receive a copy of the Buxton family history.
thanks
Diane

Hi Thimble,

The Cape archives dont allow digital or photostating so if you want the name of a researcher to transcribe the documents send me a PM

Hello Dianne,  I have been sitting in the CT Archives for a couple of day, and am also trying to  tie up the connectirn between Jane Ann Clay (Edmonds) and the Buxton tie.  This also seems to be tied up with Lillias Christine Josephine Bourhill.  If you have any further information, it would be most appreciated.  Kind regards Judes
