« on: Wednesday 18 April 07 14:21 BST (UK) »
Anyone ever come across the place name Grouse Hall in Co.Kerry i think it is in Castleisland.

Its not a townland so would like to know where it is on the map.

On some of the baptism records it has Grouse Hill others have Grouse Hall.

might be worth dropping Kerry library a line. . copied from their webby. .
'The most amusing names of houses were jokes about small lodges such as Barnacle Lodge, Oyster Hall, Grouse Hall, all of which have now crumbled away'
I read a bit but couldn't get any other references, sorry

Grouse Hall is described in a book 'Houses of Kerry' by Valerie Bary, pub. Ballinakella Press Co. Clare Ireland 1994.

The following information about Grouse Hall is from the book:

Grouse Hall, Ballincusslane, Scartaglin.

Associated Families:  Fitzgerald, Cahill
Townland:  Knockrower
Location:  Located on a side road leading south from the Scartaglin-Ballydesmond Road, c. 5kn from Scartaglin.

Present Condition:  Ruined

Features:  In the mid 19th Century, this was a small, long stone cottage in the shape of an elongated T.  There was not garden and no plantation.  A long avenue led to it across the bogs.  It was set on high round at the edge of Annagh Bog, with views towards  The Reeks and the Valley of the Upper Brown Flesk.

History:
Not much is known of the history of Grouse hall, other than it was used as a hunting lodge by the local gentlemen.  It is also believed that the Fitzgerald family may have owned a mill in hte valley.  Early in the 1970s, the house, then owned by the Cahills, was burned and is now in a ruined state.  It shows signs of having been a commodious hunting lodge for such a desolate spot.

Hope this helps, Gerard!
