1851/1861 census Look-up for Ayr please
« on: Thursday 19 April 07 12:49 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Could someone please look for me and try and find a John and his wife Agnes GILLESPIE. They were both born in Ireland.

John  Gillespie was born about 1794 (making his age 47 on the 1841 census) and Agnes was born about 1796 making her age 45 years.

On the 1841 census they were living in Dailly in Ayr with their children Ann age 13, Charles age 20, Jean age 17 and Agnes age 19.

If someone could please try and find them for me it would be wonderful

Kind Regards

Wendy

Hi Susan,

Going by the 1841 census, all John and Agnes Gillespie's children that I know of were born in Ayr, so I am hoping that the family would be still living there.

I do know that their son Charles was married on the 1851 census and was living in Lanark Glasgow with his wife and 3 children.

Kind regards

Wendy

Hi Wendy

This is the closest entry I can see on the 1851 census index, with a likely mistranscription on the surname:

Agnes Glaspy    62, b. Ireland
Mary Glaspy    32, sewer muslin, b. Kirkmahoe, Wigton
Agres Glaspy    27, b. Ballantrae, Ayr
Jane Glaspy    25, b. Ballantrae, Ayr
Margaret Glaspy 24, b. Girvan Ayr
Jannet Canningham 4, grandddaughter, b. Glasgow
Jemes McHallam    12, grandson, b. Dailly, Ayr
Anne McMurtrie    6, granddaughter, b. Maybole, Ayr

Address: Old Street, Girvan

Regards.

Hi Monica,

I have now had a gooooood look at the census that you sent me and I dont believe it is the right one, as nothing seems to fit in.

I will be seeing my Dad tomorrow, in whom I am helping with the Family Tree and I will get back to you.

Thanks for all your help

Wendy

That a pity Wendy  :'(  It's the only one that came close on the 1851 census index. Nothing at all for John Snr.

Regards.

Monica  :)

Hi Monica,

I went into Scotlands People and brought a copy of a birth/chr of Agnes Murray Gillespie, the daughter of Charles and Agnes Gillespie. She was born 11 Oct 1851 in Lanark, Glasgow.

On the copy of her birth/chr there were two witnesses. One of the witnesses was a John Gillespie.
Do you think that this JOHN GILLESPIE could be the father of Charles, which couldn't be found on the 1851 census for Ayr???

How could I find out who this JOHN GILLESPIE was??

Any ideas would be wonderful!!!!

Kind regards
Wendy

Hi Wendy

There really isn't any way to find out who the John Gillespie showing as a witness to Charles's child could be. Even in post official registration, from 1855, witnesses to weddings would only show by name. In the OPRs, you can occasionally find an occupation or some other piece of info, but that's all. There is nothing on the OPR sadly to connect that John to any other John Gillespie showing in the 1851 Census for example.

Regards.

Monica
