Have you thought Joseph Bird may have been in the army and that could account for the 4 year gap.

There are a few with that name on this site, one of which was born in coventry and I dont like to tell you what one man was convicted of:-

Hi everyone not been on line much today so thank you all for your suggestions I wonder if military service is involved Rena I must try to look at the baptism records and the marriage record to see if there is a mention of an occupation for Joseph its just a case of when we can get to Birmingham. The reference I have for the marriage is M010661 1636-1812 which I think is a transcription for Edgbaston, Warwickshire rather than patron entry. So if /when I get to Birmingham thats where I'll start looking. The children's baptisms are C010723 1813-1825 St Martins Birmingham. So again St Martins must be the first to look for other children and any deaths may be even Joseph's.
I did e mail Birmingham library about another record a coroners report for a known date and they offered to find it for a high fee (well I thought it high as I had given name address and date) so I dread to think how much they'd charge for this one  ;D It will be cheaper and more fun to save up for a trip to Birmingham
Once again many thanks for your encouragement
