Please some ideas
« on: Wednesday 01 December 04 10:44 GMT (UK) »
I am totally  at a loss,
my granddad was born in Hull 1859 his  parents named as Samuel Thomas and Ann Hallan

I can find no trace of of the parents.

Samuel was on the 1891 Census in Fleetwood Lancs, but dead by 1894 Benjamins marriage certificate

I cannot find any trace of them, no death certificates.

Is there anyway I can find out where they came from or where all three of them where from 1859 to 1891.

Benjamin was a fisherman.

I know I should be looking for something but I do not know what,

Any ideas would be so gratefully received,,

Thanks  Jakky

Hi Jakky, ;D

it would be great if you could find them on the 1861 census for Hull.

I knew nothing of my grandfather except a rough idea of where he lived in Lancashire. I found him by trawling the streets of Stalybridge one by one.

You could also try asking for a lookup of the 1861 census on the Yorkshire board.

Hello you lovely people,

Thank you for your time and help.

The Benjamin who is the masters son is not my Ben, but my Ben was on the trawler in Gorleston Harbour, which I am so delighted about as I have recently moved here and I live on the harbour, a small world indeed
It is him as he was not at home on census night 1901 at Fleetwood only my grandmother and my mum.

Or I feel it was him, wrong thing to be doing really, but I just know.

I have his birth certificate Holy Trinity 1859 and marriage and death. The big problem is his father and mother, I cannot seem to get past them, maybe there are no records of them and I will never know.

But, thank you I am as ever overawed at the kindness of the folk on this site,

Hi Jakky,

you say you have Samuel on the 91 census. That would give the place where he was born, and his age. Was he listed as widowed? or was Anne still around? if so, her age and where she was born will be given.

Assuming that they didn't come from the same town/village, that would give you 2 parishes to start looking at, as well as a good time frame. You could check the parish records to see if they married in her home parish, which was usually the case.

If you find the marriage there, you can order the marriage cert. Their fathers names should be given, together with the addresses of the happy couple. You can then search the census' of those places previous to the marriage.

Should be enough to get you started I hope.

good luck

Sometimes you just get bogged down with something, you just need a bit of a kick start to get you going again. I think we've all been there and done it.  :)

Thats the beauty of this board  ;D
