Struggling with Martha Furbank
« on: Friday 20 April 07 11:34 BST (UK) »
I am having great difficulties in finding any information on Martha Furbank or Firbank who was born in Fulbourn 1847 and married my great grandfather Charles Hall born 1843 also of Fulbourn.

Have trawled through the census records with no luck. Any info/help would be much appreciated.

Regretfully no marriage certificate. Info obtained from my elderly aunt. I live in Oxfordshire and am researching electronically at this stage.

Who were their children and when/where were they born? You need as much information as possible when trying to trace people in censuses who don't want to be found!

There are two Charles Hall(s) in Cambs with wife Martha in 1871

The one you are looking for is in Fulbourne
RG10 1581 folio 29A
Charles Halls head marr 27 ag lab b Fulbourn
Martha Halls wife 23 b Fulbourn
Arthur W Halls son 1 b Fulbourn
Mary Halls mother widow 67 charwoman b Fulbourn

And in 1881 same family in Fulbourn, mother still living with them, but more children. You have to search against Halls though, which according to the IGI was his baptism spelling as well

They are as Halls in 1881.

Charles Halls bap 16 July 1843 in Fulbourn. Father Thomas mother Mary.

Mary is with family in 1881. Eldest child Arthur W. Halls b 1870.

There is a marriage in Chesterton (reg district for Fulbourn)
1868 Charles Halls to Martha GILSON.

 Martha Gilson b Fulbourn Q4 1847
  Martha Gilson b Fulbourn Q1 1849.

Would be worth checking birth cert of one of children.

Hi

I can see a Charles Hall marrying a Martha Haynes in Ely, Cambs in 1870, might not be your one mind, is the name Furbank from your aunt???
On the 71 Martha and Charles have a small son 6 weeks old - Arthur I think it was :D

Do you have the census for them as a married couple???

Fulbourn parish register has been extracted onto the IGI up to 1851. There's no Martha Furbank but there is Martha Gilson christened 9 Jan 1848. As Tazzie says, you need the birth cert of your grandparent, child of Charles and Martha

Just shows you can't rely on word of mouth but should work backwards from the known to the unknown! But there were vast numbers of Furbanks in Fulbourn.
