Got the wedding certificate for Sarah Pitt and Richard Rees - which annoyingly took place before the 1841 census making the Pitt's difficult to look up.  Please could a kind soul could tell me who the witnesses were, where Sarah lived and as I can't make out Richard's address his too.

Hi Tigces,

The witnesses look like

Charles Woodman
Thomas Penderwood

Richard's address: Gough Building?

(Sarah's I haven't a clue)
"My dear, I think the English pronounce it 'appiness"

Where did the marriage take place? Her address looks like a Welsh name to me
Yn---edwyn?  But I'm quite willing to be wrong...

Could her address be Ynyscedwyn?  I did a google search with the spelling I thought I could make out and this place came up and as Sarah gives her occupation as servant maid, it is possible she was working and living here.

"Origins of an estate
Ynyscedwyn House in the parish of Ystradgynlais was for centuries the centre of a large estate which played an influential role in the history and development of the Upper Swansea Valley and indeed much of south-west Breconshire and the neighbouring counties.
There has been much debate about the origins of the name, some claiming it derives from YNYS Y COED GWYN (Island of the white wood), others from the personal names Edwin or Cedwyn.
Both the etymology and the early history are obscure but it is thought that Ynyscedwyn was at some time the seat of Gruffydd Gwyr who took part in the revolt of 1287 against the rule of Edward I."

Modified;  As her husband was a cabinet maker perhaps he lived there too.  Looking at the image again, it looks as though the address for both of them is Gough Building, Ynyscedwyn.

I've done another search and Gough Buildings are on the estate, see the webpage http://history.powys.org.uk/history/ystrad/gough2.html

And in 1841 there's a 29 year old painter called Charles Woodman living in Llangafelach, Glamorgan - the only Charles Woodman showing in the whole of Wales, so this looks like one of your witnesses.

cheers

Paul

Both places are in Ystradgynlais
Gough Buildings still exsist though now renamed Rhestr Fawr.   The street  backed on to the Swansea valley canal which is now the Swansea Brecon Road.
Ynyscedwyn House, the seat of the Gough Family, was demolished some years ago.
There is also a road called Ynyscedwyn.

Had a look at Charles Woodman notice a Hannah Jones born 1821c no birth place, as I happen to know Thomas is Alice father (I have Alice and Henry's wedding certificate) and Alice was born in Lydney - Wales/Gloucestershire a Marris and R A Jones witnessed the wedding it makes this census  :D
