Someone told me that he was in the Cheshire Regiment last night, but I'd wondered because i saw it had "R.E." after his number.  I've got this off his marriage certificate -

George Garside BATES - Sapper 2191747 R.E.

and then from a newspaper article (Ashton Reporter, 17 July 1942) -

BATES
There are 4 brothers in the Bates family and they are all serving in the Forces.  Their father Mr Geo. W Bates, licensee of the Foresters Call, Old Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne, was badly gassed in Flanders in the last war and came homea physical wreck.  The outbreak of the present war found Alfred (34) and Eric (25) already in the Army.  The younger boys George (23) and Jack (20) volunteered for service.
---------

Geo. W Bates (the W is William)
Alfred = Alfred Edward Bates
Jack = Jack Taylor Bates
Eric = just Eric - no middle name

Any info would be great!

Many thanks

~ Claire

Hi Clare

Have you thought of applying for his Service Record?

I don't know if I can -

Requests from former Service personnel I'm not
Requests from Interested parties i am but can't get the person to give their permission - my hub was adopted
Records of Deceased Personnel can't prove it because I don't know him
What about records in the public domain? it's not old enough

thanks

I've just had amazing success on a WW1 so am now going to try here too!!

I've got a marriage cert that tells me that my husband's granddad's war info was -

George Garside BATES
Sapper 2191747
R.E.

I've also got a newspaper article that reads -

17 July 1942 - BATES

There are 4 brothers in the Bates famioly and they are all serving in the Forces.  Their father Mr George W Bates of Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire was badly gassed in Flanders in the last war and came home a physical wreck.  Out at present are Alfred (34) and Erin (25) already in the Army and the younger boys George (23) and Jack (20) volunteered for service.

Is it possible to get George's war record or anything more on his service?

Thank you

Hi Claire

Assuming we are talking about WW2 here, then service records for post WW1 are still with the Ministry of Defence.  If the serviceman is deceased then the next of kin can apply see:
