Mysterious Relatives.
« on: Friday 20 April 07 20:31 BST (UK) »
A cousin is trying to trace Gertrude Ellen Myers who married Rev E.H. Proctor and at some point were missionaries in Fricksburg, S.Africa.  There are family stories of a mysterious death  and if anyone (Dear Mole) can point us in the right direct it would be much appreciated.

Hi Lualeni

Now you got everyone wondering...

There is an Estate file in the Pietermaritzburg Archive for Gertrude:

DEPOT     NAB
SOURCE    MSCE
REFERENCE 21172/1930
DESCRIPTION          PROCTOR, GERTRUDE ELLEN. (S/S PROCTOR, EDWIN HALLIWELL).
STARTING  1930
ENDING    1955

Quite a long starting and ending date which makes one wonder what the file contains.  Maybe a Death certificate showing the cause?

Saw this reference for Edwin in the Transvaal archive - it looks like he has remarried -

DEPOT     TAB
SOURCE    MHG
REFERENCE 5982/54
DESCRIPTION          PROCTOR, EDWIN HALLIWELL.
STARTING  19540000
ENDING    19540000
REMARKS   SURVIVING SPOUSE CLARA ALMA CLARKSON PROCTOR (BORN TURTON)                       PREDECEASED SPOUSE GERTRUDE ELLEN PROCTOR (BORN MYERS).

Thanks Moira,
I never cease to be amazed what this site can produce in so little time.
We now have the time frame.
I wonder is it possible to access these records at all? A file over 20 years must have quite a bit in it.

Hi Lualeni

The only way to solve the mystery is to get copies of the contents of the file.  One of the ways to do that is to get copies as described in the posting http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,211554.0.html.  I suggest thay you ask for the death notice although that will only give you clinical data - parents, husband, occupation, date of death, address, children, etc and hope that there is a a death cerificate as well which will be the key to the mystery.

If only I was near the Archive in question cause I really like a mystery....

Thanks Moira. I will work on it. Your information has winged its way to Canada and back already.
Do they allow personal visits?

Hmmm.
Moira,
Cousin working on this and files sent for.
File opening and remaining open for 20+ years and only closing on death of spouse in 1955.
Family tale that lady in bath at time of demise?
Is there something we should be told?
When you have read this I think perhaps the post should be deleted in the interest of sensibilities. (I can always let you know what we find out direct to assuage your curiosity.)

Hello Lualeni,

I cannot help with info about Gertrude but I do have a very small tree with descendants of Rev. Proctor and Clara Alma Clarkson Turton.  According to info I have received, Rev. Proctor died on 22 Aug 1954 at Concord Missionary Home in Durban.  He and Clara appear to have had only one child.  Clara Alma Clarkson Turton was born in 1897at Hayfields, Glencoe and died in 1975.  She was a daughter of Frank Turton and Amy Elizabeth Marshall and a granddaughter of Josiah Turton and Jane Elizabeth Raistrick.

Regards,

Pat
