Dating challenge - Thomas Field

This detail from a poorly coloured large opaltype (printed on glass) is possibly a copy of an older pic which looks like it had been folded across the middle. It's a rarity in this family because they did not believe in making images of anything created by God.

Consequently, identifying the individuals will not be easy.

They are a father, born in the 1790s, and five of his six sons. The date may help determine which ones, because the eldest, the black sheep of the family, was in jail for ten years at one point. He was born in 1842, and his brothers between 1846 and 1855. There is a set of twins among them, probably not identical, born in 1850.

A possible date for the picture, and any estimates of ages, would be much appreciated.

To allow for possible "fashion lag", I probably should have added that this is an Australian photo.

Hi Didy  :)

Great photo!  :D

I would say it dates from the late 1870s or maybe 1880s.  The gents are wearing a mixture of frock coats and most have the skinny bow-tie that was fashionable from the 70s.

Cheers

Going by the birthdates you've given, I'd agree with Prue.

Lovely photo, you're lucky to have it.
