Have a subscription to Emeralds Ancestor?
« on: Tuesday 24 April 07 02:09 BST (UK) »
Hi,

If you do have a subscription to the Emeralds Ancestor site,
would you mind terribly to look up if there is a McKenna marriage to a Mary Jordan (with all possible spelling) in Co Antrim?

Gratefully yours,

Tees

Hi Tees

I've checked Mary Jordan marriages to McKenna - nothing.  When I tried to search for McKenna marriages I get 620 results(!) - can you narrow down a date do you think?

Hi Jaylay--

The trouble is that I do not know the first name of McKenna who married Mary Jordan. Her surname may be mistranscribed incorrectly.

I found her on US Census with two sons with the surnames of McKenna as she had married before as confirmed by her second marriage record. I am trying to find out where and when they moved to Scotland as her two sons were born there.

The oldest son was born in 1882 and second one in 1885.

She remarried in 1888.

I am not sure when she married her McKenna man--between 1862-1882--my Jordans were from Tullyrusk area in Co Antrim if that help you any?

It is possible that her first marriage was not registered.

Many, many thanks for your efforts to look up.

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Tees

Sorry bad news I'm afraid - no sign of a Mary Jordan or Gordon (with spelling variants) having married a McKenna.  I have several marriages in Antrim/Armagh I'm trying to trace - they took registration very casually in those days didn't they?!

Good luck with your search - hopefully something will turn up!

Hi Jaylay,

Gordon?? My Jordans can be Jardine Jardin Jorden and Jordon but never Gordon. These names are very rarely in my family--Jordan is the consistent spelling of their surname on the most of the records I have on them.

See any Jordan-McKenna marriages barring Mary?

I think it had a lot to do with the priests/vicars forgetting to send the registrations in. Perhaps this is one of these marriages going missing from the registration.

Thank you for your kind efforts.

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Tees

OK - checked Jordan (any first name) and McKenna - nothing there I'm afraid
Also Jardin, Jardine, Jorden.  Nothing.  Can you think of any other way she would have spelt her name?

Hi Jaylay!

I only know that she spelt her name correctly according to the IGI--the second marriage was in Illinois, USA.

I know she is mine because of her parentage. But I could not find her first marriage record as it will confirmed whether I have her father pegged correctly just to make sure. What more is that her sister is in USA as well. I have her marriage record.

My friend kindly tried to find her marriage record in Scotland---could not find her.

I have many possible McKenna births in Scotland but which is her son?? She was not even in the Scottish census from 1880 or earlier.

Could not afford to open all the births just to find out! :)

Any suggestion to think out of the box on this one??

Kind regards,

Tees

Hi Tees

What were the names of the sons?  It's possible one of them was named after his father - that would at least give you another search option.  I have checked the Ulster Historical Foundation website for marriages for Mary Jordan, and there is one in 1878.  The website does not allow a surname only search - so if we even had a guess at McKenna's first name it could lead us somewhere.  Then it might be worth the £6 to access five records from the index.

Can you find out from the US census how many years her marriage to this McKenna had lasted at the time of the census?  I know at least some of the censuses had this as a question.  It could narrow things down a little and then you would know if it was worth paying for a record or not.

I have also tried all counties (instead ofspecifying Antrim) on Emerald Ancestors and drawn a blank.

Hi Jaylay,

I had seen the 1878 Mary Jordan. I hesitate because it is a poor value for money.

The sons' names are: Thomas & James.

The only census I have on this family is in 1910--unfortunately, she was widowed on it for the second time. For any widow or widower, they will not record the length of marriage.

Could not find her in 1900 Census with her second husband.

Kind regards,

Tees
