paterson family
« on: Saturday 28 April 07 13:40 BST (UK) »
we always thought our grandmother was called patterson prior to marriage we even had certs. with pattinson on but we have since found out that it was paterson from dumfriesshire her first name was joan her mother elizabeth and then her mother joan also the problem we are coming across is on every census and cert that we get the name is slightly differently spelt from joan/johann/joanna.to complicate things farther my father says his mam was known as joanne by everyone not joan.Does anyone have these people in their tree:
joan b1900
elizabeth b1880
joan b1849?

Hi Parky

What information do you know to be true?  Start from that and work backwards.

Which is the first BMD you are having trouble with?

Do you have the birth dates you give from a family Bible or from certs you have bought?

It is impossible to trace these people with the info you have posted as presumably all the ladies married?

Give us a bit more information & we can try to help.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thats becoming part of the problem they all seem to have had children before marriage except the youngest joan who married a park from cumbria.I know elizabeth married a john miller who at time of marriage his address was given as govan glasgow but looking at the census return for 1901 it looks like she may have had 3 children(perhaps even more) before marrying john on 1-11-1907.Noone in the family can remember these other children being mentioned we dont know if they died or not.We do know that they were all farm workers so they seem to have moved about a lot but we presume they stayed in the same sort of area.I ordered a cert for elizabeth b1880 but when it came back mother was listed as jessie with a father called james but on census returns joan snr is unmarried so this cant be them.

Given that these names are not unusual - have you got your grandparents' marriage certificate?

What does it say?

So you might expect to find Elizabeth and baby Joan together on the Scottish 1901 census.  Is this what you found?  What surnames did the other children have?  And is it possible that she was married before?

I am guessing that there  is a problem of transcription here - if your ancestors could not read, it is possible that officials wrote what they believed they heard and Patterson, Paterson, Pattinson all sound alike.  It could be that you are etracing the correct family after all.

I wonder if John MILLER was in the vicinity in 1901?  Perhaps they just anticipated the marriage service?  many of mine did!

;)

Ok I see where you are coming from now.

It does look like them, from what you have said.

Maybe the older children were brought up by granny or another relative?

Sorry not to be more helpful - but perhaps a rellie will spot the extra details you have posted!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
