As it was a connection with a family a fringe member of mine married into, I didn't think it worth paying the full membership fee for. Does anyone know if this "free" period means I will now be able to get in touch with this person?

I presume so - so check it out quick  ;D

Hi Migky, that hasn't come out right. I think you might need to modify the link. It's only showing www.lost at the moment.

hyperlinks to lost cousins don't work on rootschat.  I think it is the same for ancestry aid.  You need to spell it out as aghadowey has just done.

It's not too much help if you haven't found your ancestor on the 1881 census, or am I missing something?

You're not missing anything at all.  It's a giant database to match people who have logged an interest in individuals on the 1881 census.  Great idea (a) if you know your ancestors/blood relatives in 1881, and (b) if you have the energy to log them all on Lost Cousins.

Just to answer my own question from earlier - yes, you can contact people during this free period.

I've just had a reply from my "fringe relative"  :)

Hi Julian....I put off entering mine in until yesterday as I really couldn't face the prospect of having to look them all up again and get the exact LDS references for them all....but actually in the end it turned out not to be such a huge job after all...

It isn't as onerous as it used to be.  They've set it up nicely so that for large families it's only a few keystrokes more than the name itself - once you've got the head of household entered.

I think Lost Cousins is a brilliant idea - but I guess people are put off by the slog of entering stuff.

What's for sure, you're more likely to get contacts from people who are taking FH research seriously, in contrast to another site (now connected to a TV company)  ::)
