Can anyone please help me to find William Fewings on the 1841 census aged about 12 or 13. I have no idea where he lived.

Just doing a bit of housekeeping on the Devon Board. Are you still looking for this or have you since found the information? Just confirming if some of these older requests are still required. Kris  :D

Really sorry I haven't replied to this request. Completely forgot about it. I also have had to change log in name. :-[

I only know that William Fewings/Fewins/Fuens was born in Creacombe in 1828. Yesterday I think I found the Death Certificate for his father John in 1837 in Witheridge. John was married to an Ann Styles in 1828 in Creacombe. On the map it only looks like Witheridge is a few miles from Creacombe. I also think he has a brother/cousin called James. On his marriage certificate a James Fewings is a witness.

On the 1861 census there is a James born circa 1832 born Witheridge and living in Plymouth where William was married in 1856.

I also believe that his mother remarried to Nathaniel Davey circa 1840. On the 1851 census he is living with Nathaniel and Ann and described as SonL which I think is step son. On the 1861 census he is still called Fewings/Fuens. William suddenly changed his name on the 1871 census to Davey!!!

So all I can think of is to look at the 1841 census for Witheridge to see if I can find him.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Margaret

Hi Margaret. I can find Nathaniel and family in Bickleigh but alas William is not present. I can see 3 Williams elsewhere in Devon aged 11-13 but all appear to be part of other families. In Witheridge there is the family of William and Ann but also no son James!

I thought I would try and help you out here.

I have found a William Davy born Witheridge aged 20 on the 1851 living Chumleigh as a servant to a wheelwright. But no William Fewings anywhere on 1851 to fit.

Would a PR baptismal look up help you out?

Best Wishes

Thanks Kris and Debbie.

Kris. I know that they are the right family because I can identify them on the 1851 census minus Mariah. William is also on the same census.

Debbie. I am sure you will appreciate that I would love to find William's birth. I know it was in Creacombe in 1828 but that is all I know. Thank you for the offer to look it up in the Parish Records.

Do either of you know if it was common practice at the time to send young children out to live and work in another area? If so I bet it will be difficult to identify William as there are two or three William Fewins/Fewings on the 1841 census living in the area.

Thank you both very much for your help it is much appreciated. :)

Margaret
