Help with a Guernsey birth please

Hi all,

I have been looking on the 1901 census and my husband's Great great grandfather, who was living in Dover in 1901, shows his place of birth as Guernsey (spelt Gurnsey!), aged 32.  I haven't been able to find any info out about him and wondered whether anybody could help me to find out more about him.

His name was FRANCIS J HAMPDEN and he was born c 1869.

It is me again!

I have just found his marriage, which was to Clara Hannah Bennett in 1894, in Medway, so he must have come to England either some while before his marriage, or especially for it!

The only name I have been able to find with a Google search for HAMPDEN & Guernsey is HAMPTONNE. Could it be that this was his birth name and he anglisized(sp?) it when he came to England?

Any help would be much appreciated

Hi sue,

If you get the marriage you found it should give you his fathers name...this would make it easier to search for him in census's. Will have a look at the 1891 and see if I can find anything that matches.

Hi Sue,

Sorry cant see him in the 1891 but computer is running very slow at the moment so having probs searching under diff spellings...maybe someone else will have more luck.

Many thanks for looking. You are right, I think I am going to have to order the marriage cert.

If you could find anything on the censuses I would be very grateful.
