I think this is a possible for Margaret in 1881:

14 Gloucester Road, Elswick
William McCowan, m, 30, Woolwich, Kent -- Railway clerk
Margt. McCowan, f, 27, Scotland

There's a December 1874 marriage date for them on freebmd and a marriage of a Margaret McCowan and George Eltringham in Newcastle, March 1884.  :)

That was a possibility i noticed when checking the BMD's, but ignored it. It had crossed my mind that she may have been married before. Many thanks Hume.

Margaret did marry William McCowan in December in Newcastle 1874

Glad that's sorted. There's a death for a William McCowan in Newcastle, September 1882, aged 32 which, although a year out from the 1881 census, matches up with William.  :)
