Bishops Transcrpts.
« on: Tuesday 01 May 07 11:21 BST (UK) »
Can anyone please tell me what type of information I would get from the "Bishops Transcripts". On September 30th 1902 my grandparents left their posts as schoolmaster and school teacher  at Llanfechain School, Montgomeryshire.
Would the reason for their leaving be recorded in the "Bishops Transcripts"? Llanfechain being a church school.
My grandparents had committed no offence other than falling in love.
Grandfathers first wife had died in 1892, [ leaving four young children] and he wished to marry my grandmother, who was the younger sister of his first wife, which was an offence at that time for a husband to marry a desceased wifes sister, the law being changed in 1907 permitting such marriages.
The only words recorded in the School Log  are,  "Today I leave my post as master of this school." unquote. He later returned to teaching as headmaster at Penegos School, Machynlleth.
If the information cannot be foundin the "Bishops Transcripts" where may I find it.
Any help would be greatfully welcome. Many thanks, Eric.

Hi Eric,

Don't know about Bishops Transcripts however have you considered the National Archives - I was just having a look and they do appear to hold a file which includes LLanfechain Church of England School 1871 - 1918 with parish records (ref. ED 21/23131).

If you can't visit they do have a service for which they charge  - I have used this and I'd be 'stuck' if  hadn't!!

Bishops' Transcripts - from 1598, English parishes had to send their bishop an annual list of baptisms, marriages and burials. Surviving Bishops' Transcripts are usually held at the relevant County Record Office. Where the seat of the bishop is in a different county to the parish, the transcripts could be in either county.

And a further bit of information  :)

All the Montgomeryshire old parish records (from which the BT's were compiled)  are indexed on Family History Online (taken over by Find My past now) and can be viewed here:

https://www.familyhistoryonline.net

It's not free but is very very  cheap.

However, I don't think their leaving would be recorded in the Bishops Transcripts.
