not sure where to post this
« on: Wednesday 02 May 07 15:30 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information on Thomas Holland Whitehair. I believe he was born in England about 1825, Married in Victoria, Australia to Eliza Gill in 1855 and died in Parramatta, Australia in 1863. The problem is i can't find the birth or death records for him... a Thomas Holland Whitehair is buried in Paramatta but in 1875.

From the marriage 4 children were born Margaret Mary Ann 1856
                                                                Thomas H G            1859
                                                                Katherine Gill          1861
                                                                Maria Louisa           1862
all born in Victoria. In 1862 Eliza and the children returned to England on board the Blue Jacket, and Thomas was supposed to follow after the work he was doing had finished but sadly he died before this. Apparently he was an engineer who assisted/designed Melbourne's water supply.
Thomas arrived in Aust in 1854 on board the Birmingham. Eliza arrived in Aust in 1855 on board the whitestar.

any information greatfully accepted

Thankyou for all of those census results the only one i had was 1881 which listed Eliza as a widow but that 1871 shows her as being married so maybe it is him in Parramatta cemetry. Maybe they separated and she went home easier to say he was following later than admit marriage breakup. She doesn't appear o have remarried tho so the other version could be true too the job just lasted a lot longer than planned.
I dont have the marriage cert yet so not sure if his parents will be listed. Might not be because he was over 30 at the time.As to the Holland that is my next task to find where that comes from.
When Margaret had children the 4 boys were given Whitehair as their 2nd name.
Catherine had no children and i am not sure about the other two.

the missing Margaret is boarding in worcestershire in1871  there is an Alice Holland daughter of a magistrate amongst the pupils boarding there also but I am not picking up any link.It is a school for the well heeled by the look of it.
Maybe Mary was missing her comfortable life and decided to return to her family. It might not have been easy for her in Australia and probably quite lonely.

I found these names in the deaths and was wondering if it is possible to do a 1841 census search to find out if they are sibling or parent of T.H.W

Charles Holland Whitehair         1846    Jan-Feb-Mar    Droitwich    Hereford and Worcester, Worcestershire
Margaret Holland Whitehair         1852    Jul-Aug-Sep    Droitwich    Hereford and Worcestershire

Jessie Holland Cole    abt 1829    1893    Oct-Nov-Dec    Bromsgrove    Hereford and Worcester, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire
Jessy Holland Whitehair married George Cole  22 SEP 1870 Upton Warren, Worcester, England.  I know this is hopefull but maybe I am on the right track.
