Burials for Turcoon, Glenzier & Blackrigg?
« on: Thursday 03 May 07 19:25 BST (UK) »
My Musgrave ancestors lived at Turcoon, Glenzier Garden and Blackrigg, Canonbie in the 1850s-1880s. Does anyone know what the local graveyard might be?

Also does anyone know if Turcoon and Blackrigg were houses or villages? And if they exist still?

Thanks, Stephanie

Hi Stephanie,
I have ancesters born around that area too.
I think they are farmhouses or may be one or two farm cottages with the farmhouses.

I have seen Turcoon spelt Tarcoon, Turcoon, Torcoon.

If you go onto www.streetmap.co.uk and put in Tarcoon and search for a 'place' then it will come up. It is in Dumfrieshire.

I think the local graveyard may be Canonbie and there are some Memorials on the web somewhere for there but I can not find them at the moment.

Thanks, Judy,

I will have a look.

I have seen MIs for Canonbie here, none of my ancestors though, as far as I know:

Several of my Armstrong family lived at Glenzier Garden in the 19th Century and another branch, the Elliots, lived at Torcoon about the same time.  If these names are of interest do let me know.  The graveyard may well be at   Kirkbankhead which is in a field at Sark Tower, Milton, Canonbie and is in Half Morton Parish.  Kinmount Willie, amongst others is buried there.

Hi Stephanie & Alan,
Here is another site which has some Canonbie Memorial Inscriptions.
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~scottish/indexcanChrh.html

Interesting to know there is another Graveyard which may prove productive.

About your Armstrong Family Alan. You haven't bey any chance come accross a Robert Armstrong born maybe around 1830ish. Farm servant.
He is the father to my Gt Grandmother but she was illegitimate so only know his name and nothing about him except the above which I got from the Canonbie Kirk Session Book.

Can't find him on the 1861 Census.

I have however lots of info on the Armstrongs that lived at Torcoon around the 1840's as I thought one of them was the father but found he wasn't.

Where is Glenzier Garden?

My Elliots are from Newcastleton Roxburgh. Are all yours from Dumfrieshire?

Hi Judy
My Elliots came from Canonbie - Archerbeck and Torcoon and went to Castleton, Roxburghshire and then spread around a bit.  In that generation there were at least 11 Children one of them, Christopher was the father of one of my Uncles so I know a bit about some of them at least.#
I have no record of a Robert Armstrong but my whole connection of Armstrongs from Glenzier Garden and Glenzier Hall - now the Fauldie - is just about beating me at the moment.  My gg grandfather Abel Armstrong of Middlebie married an Armstrong from Glenzier Garden but so it seems did his father and the previous father also married an Armstrong but I think from some where else in Canonbie.
The only consistent factor seems to be that they all married farmer's sons or daughters and that reduces the span a bit.   I would love to get closer to them if you or anyone else can help.

Hi Judy & Alan,
Thanks for info on Canonbie graveyard. My people aren't there though.

I have Armstrongs too, that I cannot find anywhere, except on the daughter's death certificate. She was Jane Armstrong c1814, of Andrew Armstrong (stone mason) and unknown Wishart. I don't know if they were from Canonbie area or down in Carlisle/Longtown in Cumberland, which is only just down the road. I am getting very muddled up with my relatives moving between the two areas.

How do you look at Kirk Sessions? Are they online anywhere, or do you have to go to the Records Office?  I have another ancestor, who was illegitimate, and the family lore is that the father was an Armstrong at Blackrigg. However, she was working at Middlebie then, and the people she was living with were Stodharts. It would be helpful to be able to search the Kirk Sessions, somehow.

I don't think I can help at this stage but you have just triggered another line of thought in that my Grandmother was a Stodart - formerly they were Stotharts - and her brother Fred married a Janet - known as Netta - Armstrong from Middlebie - her father was a clogger.
Any links do you think?
