richardson/gribbin of Cumberland & Durham
« on: Friday 04 May 07 15:40 BST (UK) »
Am researching my family tree but have so far used only census and BDM info.  I now need to go back further and would appreciate some help/tips.   Have established that my ggg grandfather, born in Tanfield Durham married Mary Ann Gribbin in Saint James, Cumberland on 22/5/1836.  Does anyone know where/how I can get more info on this.  I would like to trace my ancestors back further if possible.   Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Rootscchat,

As far as I know  the only records available before official registration in  1837  are the IGI or local parish registers.

You can search the IGI on line but not all places are covered.

Thanks for that.

The info I have came in part from the family search site, so I guess it's parish records for Whitehaven then.

Thanks again,
Nadine

You could also try the Family History Societies for those areas, you should get them if there are any on Google.

I have a Mary Ann Gribbin b 1900 dau of James Gribbin and Elizabeth nee Hebditch. Her siblings are Elizabeth Julia; Douglas Albert; John Henry; James G; and Frederick T. They seem to come from the Isle of Man at some time. Mary Ann's father came from a large family, including a Mary Jane and a Mary....any use to you - have some more info if you would like.

Mary,
Thanks, but currently haven't got a clue about my Mary Ann Gribbin.  Another contact looked up parish records for me and found the marriage and all the births of children in Cumberland (including some pre-1841 that I didn't know about) but couldn't find her birth. I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that she may have been born outside of the UK.  Most Gribbins in Whitehaven on the 1841 census born 1800-1820 seem to have been born in Ireland !!
Your dates of birth are later than I need but give me another area to look at - Isle of man.  Thanks for getting in touch, I'll see what i can dig up, but it may take some time !!!

Regards

Nadine

Have you any more info on Gribbins in Whitehaven? My Gribbins would have married in St James', Christ Church or Trinity as were not catholics, but only one of mine married a catholic as far as I can tell. I am interested in Elizabeth Julia who married Jim Lowery and had 4 children - Jack, Madge, Annie and Lilly. Lilly and her parents died in the flu epidemic in the 1920's and the remaining 3 children were brought up by aunts and uncles. Annie never married. Madge married but had no children, and Jack married, lived in Leamington Spa and had one child. Annie was brought up by my grandma.

Thanks
Mary
