Help with HELPS family please
« on: Saturday 05 May 07 22:59 BST (UK) »
Hi All

William Helps married Mary Leedham in 1835 in Leicester and had at least eight children. (Census.)

We can find the baptisms and marriages of four of them but the others have just disappeared.

The family were in the St Margarets/All Saints areas but they are being a bit of a problem to locate.

Any others researching the same family?  Any ideas of where to look next?   Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

Teddy

Wow,

Thanks Mike, that is really great.

I will look through the information and see what I can make of it all.  I had thought that William had probably married before, but I need to see the original 1835 entry to see if he was a Widower.

Do you know what the workhouse records are like for Leicester?

Thanks so much.

Teddy

If you need any help in Norfolk please do ask!

Just trawling through early burials.......

Thanks again Mike

Do you have a transcript of all registers for Leicester?

I think we need to check the workhouse records next to see if there are any clues there for William.

Many thanks again.

Teddy

Greeting’s again. ……. Teddy.

Allow me to look at those Parish Marriage Registers entries 1828 & 1835.
for William This week at the Records Office then report back here.

Whilst I’m there I can ask about Medical Records / Admission reports
For the Union House re 1861 ~ 65.
I know some ( c 1900’s ) Medical / Admission reports ( Hard copies )
are held in the strong Room.
But I understand they can only be read by Head Record Office staff.
Who at a price then type the reports up and send them on to those who have requested them ( Bona fide  next of kin )

Greeting’s Again Teddy……..

I had a look for both of the Marriages for William 1828 & 1835.

But could not locate them I’ll have another go next week. ……

I did find these three Baptism Entries though.

All Saints Parish Church Baptism Registers
Read thus :~

ANNO DOMINI BAPTISM :~ 1840.

Page. 19.

Entry No. 148.
7th. June.
Mary Ann. Daughter of William & Mary Helps.
Causeway Lane.
Father’s Occupation. Labourer.
Geo. Barker. Curate.

Entry No. 149.
7th. June.
Hannah Daughter of William & Mary Helps.
Causeway Lane.
Father’s Occupation. Labourer.
Geo. Barker. Curate.

So……. Double Baptism then
But I think Mary was 3 years old & Hannah few months old.

If the following birth G.R.O. Index Records are right.

April Qrt. 1838. Mary Ann Helps. Leicester. Cert No.:~  XV 129.
April Qrt. 1840. Hannah Helps. Leicester. Cert No. :~ XV. 119.

ANNO DOMINI BAPTISM :~ 1842.

Page. 30.
Entry No. 240.
5th. February.
Charles. Son of William & Mary Helps.
Kent Street.
Fathers Occupation. Coal Hauler.
Geo. Barker. Curate.

G.R.O. Index Records
April Qrt. 1842. Charles Helps. Leicester. Cert No. XV. 110.

But then NO sign of the others in either
St. Margaret’s, 1835 ~ 45.
 or All Saints 1837 ~ 57.

But I will continue the search next time

Re:~  Medical /Admission Records for St. Margaret’s Union House. c.1862.

Only the Records of the minutes of Committee meetings held.
Personal Records for inmates did not come into force till 1880.

Sorry. ……..
