Hope you don't mind but I removed the biro cross for you and cleaned them up a bit.

and that's when I spotted the medal ;D

Thanks for the clean up millymcb. It appears then that the most likely explanation is he is wearing someone elses jacket then. This seems to make a bit of sense as in 1914 he would have only been 17/18 and if the photo was of a training camp it would have been impossible for him to have earned this medal or even to have become a corporal.

It appears that the J Hopkins Private South Wales Borderers was him.

Another thought....

It may be the Queens Mediterranean Medal...this had the same ribbon and was obstensibly the same medal, but had Meditteranean on rear instead of South Africa.

It was awarded to those men of the militia who were sent to Gibraltar and Malta to replace those Regs who had been sent to the Cape.
One more charge and then be dumb,
