Service death in Malta Lookup help
« on: Monday 07 May 07 00:46 BST (UK) »
Hi there

Can anyone help with a relative that i am trying to find more about?

My Great Great Grandfather Thomas Brind was a soldier in the 14th (Buckinghamshire) regiment of foot. He enlisted in 1847 - 1849 and was posted to Ireland in 1850 where he met and married his wife Elizabeth. In 1853 the company departed for Malta where they were stationed.

I have managed to find out that Thomas died on the island of Malta as 'the direct results of injuries sustained in a charcoal fire in a small room'

Can anyone tell me where i can find more about the accident and his death record and also, if it still possible to find his service records.

Many thanks in advance.

Have you his attestation sheet from Kew yet??
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

I found the best thing was to go to Kew, pull the boxes with the originals in and sift through...

That way you don't miss anything, and any other mis filed family stuff can tip up unexpectedly!!!

I think a trip to Kew is looking increasingly likely!

I have another relatives attestation from his time in the Royal West Kent Regiment and I am also looking for a Ernest Walter Lorraine Brind who was in 663 Artisan Works company as a sapper and who died on board the Lancastria when it was sunk in 1940.

So lots of military history to find!!

OK, I found this on the Malta Family History site,

"Sergeant BRIND, died 19th May 1854, 14th Regiment. His death was caused by the effect of charcoal burning in a small room"

Does anyone know how else i can find out more about this and perhaps get a death certificate?
Its not coming up in the normal GRO indexes.

Thanks

It will not be listed in the normal GRO Index, you will need to search the Military index, for this you will have to go to one of the pay to view site such as the following:
