Sorry, Newfie, did I fail to give credit where credit was due?   (I'm always worried I'm going to do that.)  :)

You made an excellent suggestion and I was adding my own experience as an example.  I hope I didn't cause any offense.

The funny thing is that my father and his brother never compared their birth certificates so my father always thought their mother's maiden name was X when it was Y.

Regards,
Josephine

Jo,

I do think it's worth it to try to find the funeral home and make an inquiry.  I've had success with funerals that were held in the 1950s and 1960s (in Canada).

My mother told me a story about going to a particular city with my paternal grandfather and waiting in the car while he tromped through a cemetery looking for his brother's grave.  He was very disappointed when he didn't find it.

I couldn't find a tombstone listing for my great-uncle in that city's published transcriptions so I wrote to all of the funeral homes in the city.  A couple of them phoned or emailed to say that they didn't do the funeral, then one emailed to say they had done the funeral and gave me the details that they had on file, including the name of his common-law wife, which I wouldn't have known otherwise.  It turned out my great-uncle didn't have a tombstone.

Regards,
Josephine

Its good to learn new things you can try. These sites are great for that.

Hi there,

Can I chuck in a suggestion  ;D
You say she died in 1972- I presume she would have been in receipt of an old age pension?

That should show her exact date of birth- although not where she was born.
But at least you'd know the dates for sure.
Although I haven't a clue HOW one gets this info from the powers that be- sorry!

Never believe all you read on death certs- the person themselves is not the one giving the info, and so can often be notoriously wrong.

All the best

Carol

Newfy

How many siblings do compare their birth certificates?  I've never seen my brothers' and my children never asked to look at theirs when they were younger.
