I remember us having to switch to SMOKELESS fuel around the mid 60's because of the fogs we had in London (I remember the dreadful fog of 1963) so I think coke & smokeless are two different things...correct me if I'm wrong,

That's the word Jane, smokeless!!!, it was smokeles fuel we had to use instead of coal.
Although was'nt smokless fuel a form of coke?

This thread has reminded me of the dreadfull old 'pot boiler' coke stoves that stood in our classrooms at Primary school c 1958 - I don't know about no smoke or tar but I can still smell the fumes that came off those things.  We had to have a 'coke' monitor too, one of the lads detailed to go out and fill the coal bucket - can you imagine that today  ::)

I remember those, and fighting to get closer to them. only the big ones won, the rest got frostbite.
