Challoners in Ketley
« on: Thursday 10 May 07 14:53 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace anything at all about James Challoner b 1867 in Ketley, by the 1890's he was living in the North East of England. I have found some census details but as the surname is spelt Challinor, Chellener, Challenor and Chalnor I'm not very confident. Any help gratefully received.

I had a look on the 1851 for an Elizabeth Powell and Mansell but nothing there that was obviously her.

Perhaps get the birth cert to get her maiden surname.

Hi angelfish,

Not at all!

First I looked up Henry CHALLONER in the 1881 census on FamilySearch.

The census facility is only half-working on FamilySearch at present - if that!  But it still combines many spellings and there weren't all that many with the given name of Henry so it was easy to find one b ca 1860 in Ketley.  And he was with a MANSELL family in Durham plus one of his brothers.  He's actually listed in the index as the MANSELL Head's Grandson - but that isn't currently showing in the household ...

Then I looked for your James b ca 1867 in Ketley - and there he was still in Ketley with his Mum Elizabeth and other siblings.

(I now notice that there's also a Henry CHALLINOR, Iron Pudler, b Ketley, age 37, lodging in Wellington with a MOORE family.)

Then I looked for a likely death of William on FreeBMD after finding that Elizabeth was a widow.

All free facilities!

All the best,

JAP
