Hi Claire

it's a great picture, i can't say a recognise a lot of manchester there

i think we have a hospital that specialises in foot problems. trench foot, coming from having your feet immersed for long periods in water, was a huge problem in the earlier part of the war

It is a difficult one really to locate.  The only reason we think it is Manchester is that we have a postcard written by someone else during 1915 who talks about patrick being in hospital in Manchster.  Patrick Fagan is on the back row at the far right hand side.  Unfortunatly we don't know what regiment he was in or any other details about his service.

As they say, every little piece of info helps

I seem to recollect that part of Crumpsall Hosp.,  North Manchester had a military wing,  maybe even part of the old Springfield Workhouse.  The building is certainly old enough!  First impressions of the guy on the back row (our left) is that his cap badge is
Kings Own Royal Lancasters.

Dear Harribobs,
Am I meant to feel chastised?  Or informed?  Or both?
As it happens I feel none of the above.  My wife's late father was hospitalised into Crumpsall from the Somme prior to moving over to Wharncliffe,. in Sheffield.  My intention in responding to the hospital photo. was simply to give a clue,  but not an information overload.  I appreciated the motivation of your reply but was not too happy with the tonal quality therein.

Surely Harribobs reply hit the nail right on the head, by demonstrating the problems.  It's an impossible task to give any accurate opinion on the photo, and it could be anywhere at all.  It shows two VADs, some soldiers, and a brick wall.  It can certainly be dated to after the middle of 1915 by the style of the nurses' hats, but other than that could be in anyone of about forty places in Manchester and surrounds, or anywhere else in the UK.

It worries me that someone who goes to so much trouble to try and be informative on a forum then gets slated for his troubles.  Hardly encouraging for anyone to reply in the future.

thanks Sue

indeed i was pointing out that suggesting a brick wall is a certain hospital is manchester is very misleading even if only misguided

i have posted over 2000 posts on rootschat, 99.9% on this board helping people with their army queries with a fair amount of success, but if Bill feels his 14 posts are enough for him to criticise me, that's up to him  ;)

My Dear friends Sue and Harribobs,
Apologies most sincere.  No intention of standing on anybodies tootsies or injuring their pride.  Please forgive my "newness" or indeed "keeness" in trying to get involved with the spirit of Rootschat.
