Richard Torrens has made available on his website the Garvagh Church visitation lists of John Brown for years:

August 1818
1825 (some 348 families)
1840 (pt 1 some 348 families.)
1840 (pt 2 some 132 families, 693 individuals)

There are many church records, etc. on Bann Valley site but unfortunately there are LOTS of errors. I have copies of many of the local church records and wouldn't trust the details on the site. Names, dates, placenames the mistakes are endless- sometimes 50 or so errors on a page.  For example what says St. Paul's Parish Church (Church of Ireland) marriages (Garvagh) is actually the marriages for Moyletra Parish Church outside Garvagh.

I clicked on the link given by waiteohman and the following message appeared ...

"You have just requested a page which does not exist on this site. This is because the whole site has moved from www.4qd.org. During the move there has been lots of error correcting - and some rearrangement."

Someone must have heeded aghadowey's comments 8)

Here's the new address for the Torrens website www.torrens.org.uk

Unfortunately the records haven't really been corrected.

Unfortunately the records haven't really been corrected.

I see there's an information feedback link on the site. Richard Torrens would probably appreciate some assistance in correcting the errors or at least having some of them pointed out to him so that he could make the necessary corrections. www.torrens.org.uk/Contact/genealogy.html#give

my recollection from a few years ago is that Richard was pleased to get corrections, but he was stuck for time, so they had to be very specific - I'm pretty sure he included two or three things I suggested.

Needless to remark, 2 dead computers later, I've not got the details!

I did try to give some examples of corrections several years ago and got very sarcastic responses so have given up. Others have also had this problem. Some of the mistakes are very minor but other ones are completely wrong with names of townlands completely wrong, at least one case of a man 'marrying' another name (marriage register entries mixed up), etc. Unfortunately someone who's not in the area or just starting to research their family will not know the information is incorrect and might spend quite a bit of time searching in the wrong places.

It is important to realise that any source that that has been transcribed immediately becomes
a secondary source of information and therefore has to be treated with caution.

I have found the Bann valley site to be really useful as a source of secondary
information that allows me to go and look at the originals, especially church records.
[In other words it is a useful guide or index to what is available].

Some of the standard census substitutes at PRONI such as the hearth rolls, 1740
Protestant householder's returns and 1766 religious returns are only secondary
sources of information as they were transcribed by Tenison Groves from the originals
lost in the explosion of 1922.
