Trying to find the father of of Hilda born 9 Jan 1907 in unmarried mothers home part of old workhouse Brighton. Mother Kate Amelia Norman born 24 March 1881 Lingfield Surrey. Kate also had a son Patrick James Norman born 31 March 1911. Grateful for any information, thanks in advance

Have you got their birth certificates?  It's unlikely that you'll find out who the father was but she might have recorded the name.  Maybe the workhouse records will shed some light, I'll come back to you on that one a little later,

Hi Jane, Thank you, I don't have any birth certificate for Hilda, but I have the birh certificate of James....but James (my father) was born in the work house at Willesden Middx in 1911...it mentions he was born at Twyford Lodge (Willesden Workhouse) the mother Kate Norman General Servant Domestic of 228 Walm Lane Willesden

you may find something on the A2A website.but  i find this a bit hit and miss myself.

sometimes the fathers name was recorded as a middle name of the child ont hebirth certificate so it may be worth getting a copy to see.

Toni, this site might be useful.  The records are held at the East Sussex Records Centre in Lewes.

Also do a search for Willesden & you will see where your father was born.  These records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA)
