Shop Newydd
« on: Monday 14 May 07 08:42 BST (UK) »
Does anybody have any knowledge of the Grocers shop in Llangeinwen or what happened to the families that ran it?
In the 1860's it was run by John Williams and his wife Margaret (nee Hughes) and after their deaths it passed into the hands of other family members - surnames of Jones and Evans!!
In the 1901 census it was run by Rebecca Evans (nee Williams) and also living there with were five of her eight sons/daughters Ellin, Owen, Robert, Adeline and Lina (all born between 1873 and 1887). They were all unmarried at this time.
Can you help me trace what happened next?

Many thanks

Owen Evans of Shop newydd is remembered on
the Dwyran war memorial and also at Capel Dwyran.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records
that Private O. Evans 13204, the 2nd Bn, Devonshire
Regiment died on 11 March 1915 and a memorial to
his name is at Merville Communal Cemetery near
Armentieres in France.

Lena is a fairly rare name in Wales so  I
think the following two references are pretty
sure to be yours.

Capel Dwyran has an  inscription (translated):

In tender memory of Lena
loving spouse of R.T. Owen
Pencraig
dear mother of her children
1887-1954.
Also to her dear spouse
R.T. Owen
1883-1962

FreeBMD has a possible matching marriage at Carnarvon
11b/695 in the September Quarter of 1907
between Lena Evans and Robert Thomas Owen

Bob,

Thanks again - I am sure the Lena Evans/Robert Owen connection is right as the dates tie in.
Am I right in thinking you have access to Capel Dwyran records?

Maybe you can tell me if any detals are there for Rebecca Evans (nee Wiilliams) born 1850 or her parents John Williams (Born 1810 in Llanallgo) and Margaret (nee Hughes - born 1808 in Llangadwaldr). They were both alive in 1881 aged 71 and 72 but had died by the 1891 census. On looking at Free BMD there are many options and I wondered if the Capel Dwyran records could point out an actual date of their deaths.
