The old ruin I mentioned in one of the paintings appears to be a derelict Salt House - the industry which I presume gave Saltburn its name.

Hi Gary, the town’s name is Saltcoats; originally “Salt Cots” as the “cots” (cottages) were built adjacent to the salt pans where salt water was allowed to evaporate.
From my childhood in Saltcoats, I don’t recall any structure known as a Salt House and there are no cliffs of any decent size around.

Just to clarify that Saltburn (Saltburn by the Sea) is in North Yorkshire.  A wonderful place, and OH and I visit each year for the Folk Festival.

Hi Gary, the first is most definitely Saltcoats Harbour. The second could be as BumbleB suggests.
Robert’s occupation was Gas Retort Setter and he invented something to improve the process of Gas Retort(ing). It is possible he travelled to demonstrate his invention. I believe a Gas Retort heated coal until it gave off gas which was stored in large gasometers until required for use. I recall gas street lighting in Saltcoats until the early 1950s and it’s gasometer which was situated directly opposite my Primary School.

The pyramid near edge of picture 2 might be Ailsa Craig (aka Paddy's Milestone). The feature beside it looks like a rock with a lighthouse.

Yes, it does resemble Ailsa Craig but there is no island/rock bar between it and the mainland coast.
