Details on marriage certificate
« on: Monday 14 May 07 11:50 BST (UK) »
Hi folks.
Just wondering if anyone can shed some liight on a query. I have managed to locate my g grandparents marriage in Ballymena 1883. Is there a reason why neither the bride or grooms mother's names are included in the details? This part is left blank. With no mother's names, I am now struggling with birth look ups.
Thanks anyway.

Gail :)

Hi Gail,

On all of the Marriage Certs that I have, (England and Wales) only the Bride & Grooms Father's names and Occupations are given, - never the Mother's. However, the Mother's details are given on Birth Certificates.

Unlike the extremely well detailed Scottish Certificates, it is usual for Irish certificates to only contain the fathers' names.

Thank you for your replies. I wasn't sure if these omissions were the norm or not.

Hi Gail, the Bride and Grooms mothers names are only recorded if they are under 21 at the time of marriage as they are classed as minors and need both parents present.

I have managed to look up my great-grandparent's deaths on SP. From these I have been able to get parents names for them both, including mother's maiden names. I am a step closer to births now, and maybe even my gg grandparents weddings.

It's great when Scottish documents turn up trumps for Irish relatives - well done.
