belfast look-up please - GANE
« on: Monday 14 May 07 15:56 BST (UK) »
My ancestor, Daniel GANE, sometimes spelt GAIN or GAHAN was born in Belfast according the 1891 census at Macclesfield, Cheshire, as was his wife Mary Kilday or Kildare.  Daniel was born in 1835, and his father was James Gane, a stonemason.   Mary was born in 1837, and her father was a labourer.  Any clues as to where I can go from there?
Regards, Reggie

Hiya Reggie,

Griffiths Valuation for Co. Antrim 1861-2 has the following listings for Belfast

Patrick Mc Gahan, Smithfield Townparks, Third Street, Shankill.
Patrick Mc Gahan, Smithfield Townparks, Third Street, Shankill.

I wonder if there's a possibility that the Mc was dropped when the family moved to England.

There are some Gaines and one Gahan listed but they're in country areas of Antrim ... not near Belfast.

Thanks for that.  I will add it to my collection of unconnected information, and hope that some day, I will complete the jigsaw. :-\  Regina
