Family History Problems
« on: Tuesday 15 May 07 08:36 BST (UK) »
I have trouble in finding information relating Dugald McKinnon. He was born on 2 Oct 1830 in Ballachulish?? According to my records, his parents were John McKinnon and Mary Cameron and his brothers Alexander, Angus and Archibald. However, I have looked through the census of 1841 and I am finding some difficulty in finding information about them. I am sure that Alexander is Dugald's brother; this is recorded on the ship list on the Hydaspes; in which they came to Adelaide, South Australia 1851. But, I am not sure of anything else. Does anyone have any suggestions?  :'(

Hi Woodelf

Looking at IGI birth entries for John Mckinnon and Mary Cameron brings up these entries:

1. Peggy Mc Kinnon Christening: 20 MAY 1820 Banavie, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
2. Catherine Mc Kinnon  Christening: 27 MAR 1822 Banavie, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
3. Alexander Mc Kinnon Christening: 06 JUN 1824 Banavie, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
4. Peggy Mc Kinnon  Birth: 1826 Banavie, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
5. Archibald Mc Kinnon Birth: 18 NOV 1828 Banavie, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland
6. Dugald Mc Kinnon Birth: 02 OCT 1830 Banavie, Kilmallie, Argyll, Scotland

There is one possible entry in the 1841 census that could fit if Dugald has been mistrascribed as Donald:

John McKinnon    55, Lock Keeper
Mary McKinnon    50
Mary McKinnon    22
Archibald McKinnon 12
Donald McKinnon 10

Address:  Banavie Upper, Kilmallie

Did the family leave before the 1851 Census? I can't easily see them on that.

Regards.

As a general rule, re Peggy, if a child died in infancy, it was quite common to re-use the name for another later child if the name was an important family name.

I figured that, I do not know if the family moved or immigrated so to speak. I am lost for information on this.

Woodelf

There are 3 other possible chidren to John and Mary

Mary c 14/03/1813 in Corpach
Flora c 15/03/1818 in Corpach
Janet born 1819 in Corpah
you will find these on the IGI

I think John would of been born in Corpach and possibly married there before moving to Banavie which is down the road

l can't work out who Mary age 22 is in the 1841 Census is. Could be a relation or maybe Janets (b1819) middle name was Mary and she assumed  that name.
