Trying to locate an Arthur Thomas (in his 20s) born Liverpool, possibly a  clerk with the garrison at Dover Castle.

Would he be in the 1891 census being a soldier?

If he was in the Army he could have been abroad, if that was the case, he would not show up in the Census.

Hi Quarryman

I couldn't find him last time I looked :(

Do you know how long he held that position and/or if he travelled with the army?

Hi,

Sorry about the lack of detail.

He had left his Liverpool home by the time the 1891 census was taken, and he married in Dover in August 1896. He is described on his marriage certiificate as 'clerk, Army Ordnance Corps.

I know he left Dover later that year with their ten-month-old daughter!!!!!

He had severed his links with the Army, and moved to Nottingham to take up a civilian job.

I have a copy of his birth certificate issued in October 1899; I know he served in the Boer War, and presume he had to get his birth certificate to enlist.

He served for three years before returning to the UK.
