Erin

I think I'm missing something on Ancestry.  If I try to search for a marriage for instance of a Benson between say 1910 and 1920, I get a list of first names on page and a list of last names on page for each quarter of each year.  If I then view a page I get a list of names and references from Ben to Ber.  If I find what I think is the right person, how do I get from him to his wife?

On FreeBMD, as you know, if I search for a Benson between 1910 and 1920, I will get a list of only Benson's for each of those years, listed in quarters.

I'm not sure that you can. I think you have to go back and search for a spouse separately. Of course, it might be that I'm not using it properly.

I do prefer the FreeBMD, if you get a result there, you can click through to the page and see other marriages which is a lot easier.

Hi Liz,

I always use the partial index on ancestry where possible and if I get a name that looks right I can select it and the link to others on the page is from there. As you know, like free bmd it isn't a full index.

As for finding one on the full index, it's just a case of making a note of the folio and page number, but I don't know how you'd go about finding the others on page from there. Maybe someone can enlighten me? I thought that the full index image search was the same on ancestry and free bmd though  ???

Hope that makes some sense  :-\

Erin  :)

Kateblogs and Erin

Thank you for your replies - there doesn't appear to be a special trick that I was missing.

For anyone fortunate enough to have ancestors born on the Isle of Wight, the BMD index here:

http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/bmd/start.htm

lists the mother's maiden name from 1837.  :)
