The only other Eccles in Cornwall in 1841/1851 would seem to be where the adults started by being born out of county eg Ireland and came in to Falmouth.

My Higham family who were in Cornwall - we could trace no other Highams and eventually found that Robert had gone to Cornwall as a soldier from the north. So, we may find something similar for your Eccles.

What about West Loe - Lands AREA as an interpretation. We may find that is somewhere completely different then.

He may of course have been born elsewhere and brought up as a lad in West xxx Cornwall and thought that he was born there. I have come across that before.

mmmm think this is really going to be needle in haystack time isn't it! Not sure how to take it any further really if there's nothing concrete to go on. Just been looking at Eccles in Cornwall myself and as you say its pretty much an unheard of name!

Hugh Eccles m Eliza Martha Armstrong 1816 in Truro.

He is of a similar age to a Richard Eccles who is in Falmouth in 1841. He is the coastguard from Ireland, so perhaps he and Hugh were brothers. Hugh seems to have gone again by 1841.

John Eccles m Mary Perkins 16 November 1815 in Antony but there was a barracks there so I assume Mr Eccles was a soldier from the north.

When a name is sparse in a county you have to tease out facts and see if any fit for clues.

We will wait for Kris the MOD who is bound to be around here somewhere and see what she has to say.

Thanks for looking!

I was  just beginning to wonder if he just *fancied* saying he was from Cornwall because there are some possible bapts for him on the IGI around Dilworth/Longridge where most of his children are born! Don't suppose he could have got away with that fabrication on two census though - and why would he tell a lie about it anyhow!?

If they were Lancs people Cornwall would have seemed like a foreign land being so far away, so why choose that. As I said I think perhaps he lived there as a lad and so believed quite genuinely that he was born there.

Its a shame that we cannot find other Lancs people who were born there or trace James siblings.......

One day the answer may well just turn up !!!! It may be that the appopriate Cornish records are not available yet.
