St Peter’s Barracks, Jersey. Help Please.
« on: Thursday 17 May 07 14:26 BST (UK) »
Hi folks

Have found a 2 X great uncle in the 1881 census stationed at St Peter’s Barracks, Jersey as a member of the Army Hospital Corps.  I can’t see a mention of the barracks on a modern map – can anyone tell me what happened to it please?
Also his name was James Herbert YOUNG, married to Rachel, and they appear to have had children born there between 1877 and at least 1886 when he was posted back to Aldershot.  Can anyone please give me a clue as to where to look for their baptisms?

Many thanks
Spiderboy.

Hi

St Peter's Barracks is also known as St Peter's Arsenal, which still exists and is near the airport in Jersey.

Now, if I've got the correct Young in the 1881 census he had 4 children 3 of which were born in Jersey.

Edward Arthur is in the St Peters volume, 24 Dec 1870 to 16 May 1879 on page 66.

Robert Alfred is in the St Peters volume, 24 Dec 1870 to 16 May 1879 on page 73. NB he is in there as Alfred Robert.

Frederick Henry is in the St Peters volume 10 May 1879 - 16 Jun 1883 on page 41.

If you want copies of certificates please refer to (there is a cost):

www.gov.je/homeaffairs/registrar

There are local books available on the Arsenal if you want more details.

Hi there again

I was talking to a friend of mine last night and he tells me that the Barracks and the Arsenal are/were near each other but are not the same place.

The Barracks no longer exist.

Sorry for the confusion.

Many thanks Stewart you have been very helpful.

I had been told that the barracks had been demolished, glad to know they’re still there.
Yes you found the right Young family, thank you very much for finding the registrations for me and giving the link to obtain certificates.
Never having done research in Jersey can you please tell me how you went about finding them?  From the information you have shown I presume it is not the same system as in England, an index with a year, volume and page number.  I would like to know as there is a family story that there was another son named Sidney born whilst James Herbert Young was serving on the island possibly circa 1881/2 and I would like to verify or disprove this.  According to the entry in the 1891 census a daughter Rachel (possibly Rachel Louisa) was also born there circa 1882/3.  After the 1891 census the family is being particularly difficult to trace as it appears to have been split up after the father was discharged from the army as medically unfit in 1895 and “found dead in the river near Reading” in 1896.

Hi

The Jersey Archive Centre has the indexes to all BMD as supplied by the local Genealogy Society.

The island is divided up into 12 Parishes and each Parish has an index. As there are insufficient people each year to justify their own volume, a volume spans several years (depending on when the transcriber felt like starting a new volume!). They are all type written. So if you want to find a birth you have to read at least 12 books unless you know the relevant Parish.

If the entry is pre about 1841 then the Archive Centre has a copy of the record. After that you have to write to the Registrar to get a copy.

The Archive Centre is open Tuesday to Thursday and is only a mile from my house. I will call in next week and see if I can find anymore children.

Hi Stewart

Don’t know what happened (a senior moment perhaps?) but I missed your reply regarding the Barracks no longer existing.  I guess that what I was originally told was correct and the site is now probably under the airport.

The information regarding the indexes and the Archive Centre was very interesting and I now fully appreciate the trouble you went to in finding the information for me.

I would be delighted if you could look for more children for me and await the result with interest.  Looking back through some notes given to me by one of his descendants it would appear that James Herbert and his family were back at Aldershot by 1883 so hopefully this narrows down the period of your search.  With regard to the elusive Victor, she was very vague!  On one occasion she said she thought he was born in 1878 and another said 1881.  Personally I have found no trace of him so perhaps he died at a young age.

Hothere

Right, these are the Young's that were born in St Peter:

24th Dec 1870 - 16th May 1879
Muriel Doris Hope Schultes Young  - I forgot to note the page number!

10th May 1879 - 16th June 1883
Frederic Henry Young - P41
John Dale Payn Young - P130
Rachel Louisa Young - P212

There is a birth in St Helier -
11th April 1881 - 4th August 1882
Sydney Charles Young - P45

I think thatwill give you something to work on! Let me know if you require further information.

Once again my sincere thanks for the sterling work you have done.  I’m sure you have found them all for me.  I think I can probably discount Muriel Doris Hope Schultes Young and John Dale Payn Young.  I’m not so sure about the Sydney Charles in St Helier though, if his parents were at St Peter’s Barracks and the other children were registered there why would there be a registration at St Helier?  Guess I’ll have to take a chance and get the certificate!

One last question - if I came to Jersey on a day trip would it be possible to look through parish records for their baptisms and if so where would I go to find them?
