Is birth cert.needed?
« on: Friday 18 May 07 04:11 BST (UK) »
Iam trying to find a Wiiliam Mc Call that belongs to my tree but my problem is that I have 2 of them.I have them both on the 1851 census aged 24 and  both born in Glencairn.
The William I want was b 15/04/1827,his father was Joseph Mc Call b 1799 a wood forester and his mother was Margaret n Austin.
I have the 1841 census showing William at home aged 16 then come the 1851 census the 2 appear, both are married  and both head of the household
Would getting a copy of the birth cert.for 1827 verify the details I need ? ???

I apologise now if you see this elsewhere I posted it earlier (I thought)but can't find it  ;D

You'll have to check parish records for an 1827 birth (no b/c's yet).

Are there any clues in the names of the 2 William's children that might help to work out which is yours?

Can you find them in later census? You might be lucky and find an elderly parent with one William for example.

Hi Ruskie thanks for your suggestions, only 1 of the williams has a child and his name is WILLIAM,both of their wives have first names thats also in my tree so that doesn't help with certain theories
I think either birth cert. or marriage cert.(did they also name the father like english ones at this time) might be the way to go,I've got to pay to view either census or bdm but at least I could print a copy of the cert
On this great site I found a listing of who the children were named after
1st son after ...
2nd son after...
3rd son etc etc etc .Can anyone help tell me where I was!!!!!!!! ;D

Sorry, not sure what info the Scottish OPR's will give. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will be able to help you.

I've got this:
1st son named after father's father
2nd son - mother's father
3rd son - father
1st daughter - mother's mother
2nd daughter - father's mother
3rd - mother

But I believe this doesn't always apply.
Sorry I couldn't help more. Best of luck in your search.

Hi
While Scottish marriage certificates have both sets of parents unfortunately they didn't start until 1855. Marriages in OPR's unfortunately seem to rarely name parents. Quite often the reference is to the reading of the banns which is why there sometimes appears to be 2 marriages in different parishes. If William died in Scotland his death certificate should name both his parents, including mothers maiden name, This is of course assuming that the informant knows.

Hi
I would try for the death certificate as it is supposed to have both parents named.

Hi Susan

Scottish certificates are much more informative than English.  Good luck
