PRE 1855 deaths in Scotland

From the Inventory of my GGGG Grandfathers estate I've found his date of death.  It is in 1825. 
1.  How do I go about finding records of this?
2.  How much will it cost?
3.  What info is it likely to give me?
I've got his marriage details but nothing else and am stuck getting further back in his line.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

Depending on the parish, you may find a burial record or you may not.  Prior to 1855, many parish registers only recorded baptisms and banns/marriages, sometimes in a nice orderly fashion, sometimes in a haphazard way.  There may be transcriptions or indexes for Monumental Inscriptions, if his grave is marked and if the inscription was legible.

Otherwise, the parish records may have a record of mort cloth payments in the kirk sessions.  The mort cloth was hired out for burials.

Burial records have not been made available on ScotlandsPeople - the indexing and linking of images has caused problems, so you would have to search the registers themselves.  LDS have filmed many of them and you could hire the film from your local LDS Family History Centre.  Or you could visit Edinburgh to search the film there at New Register House.
