I think the WOLKIND link is a red herring too, because...

Marriage Mar 1909

COOPERSTIEN  Frymett    Cardiff  11a 599
KEMPNER  Julius     Cardiff  11a 599
LEWIS  Isabella     Cardiff  11a 599
WOLKIND  Nathan     Cardiff  11a 599

Marriages Sep 1910

Torbe  Gustave    Whitechapel  1c 495
Wolkind  Nathan     Whitechapel  1c 495

(Then several births in the Mile End/ Whitechapel area, mother's maiden name COHEN)

Can't be sure it is the same Nathan, but it looks likely that he married someone else, then remarried a COHEN.  Can't find a matching WOLKIND wife's death to prove this though!

I wouldn't let Harriet O's middle name put you off - children were not always given all their names on registration.  Sometimes a name might be added at baptism in favour of a godparent or family friend.

I think you might have to go through the complete BMDs to look for a marriage to Arthur SIMPKIN - what else do you know about where they lived etc?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Unfortunately not a lot more is known about the family.  I've trawled through the BMD index for about twenty years but can't find anything.  I think I'll have to wait until I visit Brighton next and try to find out where Harriet is buried so see if there are any clues on her gravestone.

Thanks for your help.

Hello again Claire

I assume you have contacted the other person on GR with the same Harriet?

And that you have tried variations of SIMPKIN - like SIMKIN(S) ?

Who registered Harriet's death?  Doesn't the cert give her former married names?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

OK - I have taken a deep breath!  ;D

If you want to answer the questions above, we might be able to piece something together.  Your discussion with Newfy about the PRESTON surname could be significant though.

Since it is raining you can have a look through the BMDs this afternoon as your penance!  ;D ;D

There is always the chance of a name being spelt wrong.    For years I could not find my grandparents marriage, I thought it must have been due to them travelling to India.  Then one day someone from the Cheshire board said there's a Mary Pownall married 1902, she married Emily Howard?, Mary turned out to be Harry.

Things are difficult enough as you know only too well, but someones handwriting being mis-read, or someone mis-hearing Harry for Mary.  In this case it was an ornate H.   can make things impossible.

Have just found out more information on Harriet.  On her death certificate she is registered as Kathleen Simpkin also known as Harriet Simpkin - no wonder I couldn't find her.  I believe her first husband was Reuben Pashilinsky although I haven't been able to prove that. Her death on 6.12.1976 was registered by her son Raymond Simpkin.  Harriet's last address was given as 23 Arundel Street, Brighton.  She was a widow and her husband, Arthur Charles Simpkin, was an estate agent.  Ring any bells with anyone?
