Charles Howe and Sarah Bird
« on: Tuesday 22 May 07 22:41 BST (UK) »
Hello
I'm looking for any information about Charles Howe and Sarah Bird, who married in Liverpool in 1857 and had a son, Charles William (my g g grandfather), in 1864.
Charles Howe is listed as master mariner on the birth certificate and the mother's address is given as Ray Street, but other than than I have been unable to find out any more about them.
My g g grandfather is listed as a nurse child in the 1871 census and adopted son thereafter of John and Elizabeth Platt, but I would love to find out more about what happened to his birth parents.
Any leads gratefully received. Many thanks.

Hello Steve, and a warm welcome to Rootschat :)

Have you found a registration of marriage for Charles HOWE and Sarah BIRD?  If so, the certificate should tell you the names and occupations of their respective fathers - which in turn would facilitate tracing them in census returns.

The more info you can give, the more we will be able to help ;)

Hello all. Very many thanks - so quick and so very helpful.

I'd already sent off for the marriage certificate (sorry, forgot to mention that in my first message) but thanks for the help there anyway. The big breakthrough for me, though, could be the 1861 census. The mistranscription of Bird as Bord is one that hadn't occurred to me (though I tried others, such as Birdy or Bridy). The How, rather than Howe, is more obvious (my great grandfather - not g g grandfather, as I wrongly wrote previously) was listed as Hawe in 1871.

I've now got a whole new series of leads thanks to your kind help. I'll keep you in touch with the outcome.

Thanks again.

Hello again.

I now have the marriage certificate for Charles Howe and Sarah Bird, which has them living at Eldon Place on 15 Aug 1857. Their fathers are named as William Howe (labourer) and William Bird (clerk in a merchant's office). I've found a Charles How in Rochester in 1851 who may be the same person, and a Sarah Bird in Sherwood St, Liverpool in 1851 with William and Elizabeth Bird and brother James. I've also found what may be the same James Bird from 1871 onwards married to Ellen Hewitt.

Unfortunately, I can still find no trace of Sarah and Charles (or their mother) after the birth of my g grandfather in 1864. As far as I can see, there are no likely deaths recorded, so unless I've missed them somewhere I'm now at something of a dead end again.

Once more, any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Incidentally, I'm baffled by the Sarah Gross (granddaughter?) listed on the 1861 census. This is the only reference I can find to her anywhere. I've tried some obvious alternate spellings but she doesn't appear under them either.

Very odd!  Have you traced the marriages of Sarah's siblings to see whether anyone married a GROSS or CROSS or anything similar? (I see it definitely says GROSS on the census return).  Or could she in fact have had Sarah Grace as her given names, and the enumerator misunderstood?
