« on: Thursday 24 May 07 00:30 BST (UK) »

One big difference is that civil registration of Protestant marriages started in 1845 and Catholic ones in 1864.
If you have the 1885 marriage certificate it should list name of groom's father. From there you might be able to get his parent's marriage.

Any idea where the family might have lived? If you post all the information that you have it's very likely someone on Rootschat will be able to find something.

So far all my family has come from antrim not sure of the townland. but william who was married to ann rice was a publican and im pretty sure lived in malcolmson street.
He was deceased on his sons marriage cert in 1885 but im pretty sure the wife was still alive.

You could try the Ulster Covenant online at PRONI ...
Try a search of name with Malcolmson Street as a side search? I know it's a different era but it might throw up something.

Danny,

If William & Ann's son got married in 1885, then he can't have been born much after 1868.  If you assume WW & AR were married at the time of his birth, then this gives an upper bound for the search for their marriage date.

If WW was dead in 1885, then he is unlikely to have been born much before 1800, so won't have got married until at last 1817 say.  This is the lower bound for the search.

Quite wide.
The most likely range for the event would be 1840-1860.

Er, well perhaps not today.
James Joyce House in Dublin is too far to travel.

Will have to make do with secondary sources.

73 records all up.

Can be looked at in detail for the cost of £6 per 5 records.
[£90 should cover it; £60 if you were a UGHG member.]

Unless you can narrow the field down a bit, with more info from family lore on names/locations/dates, or adopt an intelligence-led approach.

Keep in mind that they may have married "abroad".
The Empire was in full swing in the mid-19thC.

The IGI has a record of a WW marrying a RICE in 1859 in India.
However, she is a Sophia, not an Ann.
