Gadget - clicking Refresh would sort out the issue you mention - but I agree its not really what this is all about...

I don't think people would want to spend time clicking refresh while they were transcribing though, would they?

I usually look to see how many people have read the posting before - it's some kind of indication but doesn't guarantee that the question would be answered - when do you cut off - 2, 3....?

I usually press refresh once just before I start posting to see if someone has already posted an answer.  Between reading the original post and posting my answer sometimes depending on the difficulty can take ages.

Kerry, yes, - thats what I meant earlier but qualified by  - 'its not really what this is all about' .....

However, from what  Gadget has said ... I'd agree that if we have to spend time being 'tactical', analysing the likelihood of others being active looking up and transcribing then I'll not be bothering any more  :(

Problem is, how do you get around this?
I usually press refresh once just before I start posting to see if someone has already posted an answer.

I usually look up the info and then do as Kerry said, click refresh before posting

Hi Tati
If the posting is done fully, I don't have a problem with it, but as Mary A said
Another one was absent "transcribing" and never came back ....... where does this leave the original query?
ricky

Yes Ricky, that's a shame for the requester (obviously ;D). I must say I haven't seen those, but I suppose the requester would come back to the original poster  ???

Now if you've typed it out then I for one don't see why indeed you shouldn't post it if you wish to do so, even if it ends up being a double post. I'm sure the requester would hardly want to complain  ;)

Why do we all do these look-ups, am beginning to wonder.....
Do we do it for thanks, post counts, what?
I'd like to think it's just a genuine wish to help fellow researchers, not a race, reserving a place, or a point-bagging exercise.
I know I'm very grateful to others for help received in the past

It's all very sad really, if this is the case. We do look ups and answer queries because we want to help others using our resources and experience. I have particular experience is certain geographical areas and subject areas and am happy to help there. Equally, if I don't know about something, I'll ask on the relevant board and hope to get an answer from someone with knowledge of that area.

If it's all about scoring points then it makes a nonsense of this approach - a bit like being back in school - and it doesn't really help those who are seeking an answer to a problem.

Well this is what I said earlier.
