I don't think there's an official stop on Military records -there's no realistic reason for keeping WW2 material under wraps.  Censuses have to be confidential - it's a bit different.  I suspect the thought of digging all that info out is what deters the MoD ... & you can see why :)

Hi Alison

Don't give up!

Try posting on the emigration boards as some Rootschatters only view specific areas to their research.  When I first joined, I was searching for my husbands grandfather who walked out on his family in 1946.  It was nearly 12 months later when someone on the Australian board spotted an 'in memorian' notice in the newspaper archives of Adelaide.  Turns out he emigrated in 1985 as a pensioner with his 'girlfriend' and a 'stepson'. He died in 1990 and a kind rootschatter sent us a photo of his grave and we obtained his death cert which confirmed he was the man we were looking for. His widow is close to 100 years old and another Rootschatter hand delivered a letter from us to the nursing home where she resided But  unfortunately doesnt know anything of his past.....but the main thing is my mother-in-law now knows where his resting place is and has a momento of his grave.

Someone out there will find him!  We even tried the Salvation Army who offer a wonderful service but didnt manage to find him!  We are still to discover what happened to him between 1946-1985 but at least know his resting place.

My advice is to create a free e-mail adddress (different from your usual address) and search the internet for 'Missing people' websites and also write to newspapers that are local to his disappearance.

Keep the faith ~ You will find him, one day!

Cheers & Best of Luck :D

114! Surely there is just a 100 year closure on service records like census?
Alison

I don't know about England - but in Australia there is a 30 year closure on military records & the data is then available to anyone

ok - to keep you all updated...iv applied (and paid lol) to GRO traceline to find out anything they can about my grandad. Should know something within 2 weeks! ANd also applied to London met archives for a search of the admissions and discharge register of where he was born - with a bit of luck it might give me a bit of a clue as to his exact parentage!

If i find a death reference then i can get his navy and RAF service records - do they include pictures?
Will keep you informed.
