Hollingbourne work house
« on: Saturday 26 May 07 19:05 BST (UK) »
Hi

My ancestor died whilst resident in Hollingbourne Union work house and I'm trying to find out where he would have been buried.

I doubt very much whether his family would have been able to arrange for his burial so I'm assuming this was done by the workhouse.  Does anybody know which graveyard he would be most likely to be buried in?  I know it would be a paupers grave and I'm not going to find a marker but I would like to know where he ended up!

Thanks in advance for any help

Hollingbourne would have been the nearest church but he may have been returned to his home parish or buried in the Sutton Road Cemetery in Maidstone (depending on the date)

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ infers that it had its own mortuary, complete with a photograph.

Centre for Kentish Studies, Sessions House, County Hall, Maidstone, Kent, ME14 1XQ. Holdings include: Guardians' minutes (1848-1930); Births (1866-1920); Deaths (1866-1921); Creed registers (1914-21); etc.

I think the mortuary is the only part of Hollingbourne Workhouse that is still standing.

Hi Bearkat and Jamaine

Thank you both for the information.

The workhouse site is very interesting - I have referred to this for many of my ancestors (they all seem to have ended up in the workhouse at sometime or another!!)

My ancestor died in 1886 - would this be too early for the Sutton Road Cemetery?

I haven't found him in his home parish so I don't think he was returned there.

Thank you again for all your help
