Well I can't see a Frederick Smallhood on later censuses so he still remains a possible.
Jan ;)

Just checked the 1861 image George Smallhood is 74 and Elizabeth 64 with a 4 year old son - unlikely ;D Think this might be a wildgoose chase as if he is grandson they should be Haines.

Hmm.

If you go back to the 1851 Census, you will find William and Eliza Haines living in Hartpury with their 1 year old daughter, Mary Ann. Except that Eliza's name is given as Elizabeth. She is the only Elizabeth Hain(e)s living in the area. (HO 107/1960 folio 470 page 14.)

I wonder if Farmer Dent had his wicked way with William's wife? Perhaps FJH was promptly 'adopted' by another family which is why we can't find him under his real name in 1861.

As you say, hmmm....

A William Haines married Eliza Hatch in Hartpury 23 April 1849
She seems to be Elizabeth in 1841, parents Thomas and Mary

I'd rather hoped her surname would be Smallwood :(

Yes Jan Thats the William who is Sue's G G Grandad. She says he had a sister called Elizabeth who had three children out of wedlock and one could be Frederick whose father could have been William Dent and Sue's theory is her name being Haines she called him Frederick Dent Haines I suppose that is possible. If I could just find a Volume and Page number for his birth would be great I would at least find his mother.Think I might send for birth certificate for FJH Newent worth a try. Thanks Billy

Hi Billy
Are William's parents Charles and Hannah? He does have a sister Elizabeth baptised 1836. Do you know the names of Elizabeth's other children? Might help track the elusive Frederick.

I've found Elizabeth with siblings including William and parents Charles and Hannah in 1841 and found her again in Maisemore in 1871 unmarried with Alice and Henry but she is also missing in 61 >:( :D
