Hi Sybil  :)

I expect you have worked out by now that TNA is the initials of The National Archives (or Kew).

Some of his service record might still be searchable at TNA, Kew, amongst the Burnt Records or Mis-sorts.  Only around 40% of these records survived the WW2 German bombings, but it is still surprising what might turn up.  You have to visit in person to do the search.

SDGW: does not concern yourself as your man survived the war.  It stands for Soldiers who Died in the Great War.  :D

Hi Sybil, I have seen a fair few medal cards, but i haven't seen one with efficiency and general service medal sections on it? Is it WWI ?

I think it is an MIC from 1937 when as you read there was an enquiry and they found he wasn't entitled to any. A lot of soldiers families tried to get WWI medals just before WWII.

MIC = Medal Index Card

I've tried looking around and it looks as if the efficiency and general service medals didn't appear on the cards till the 30's so i am certain is from a lot later and relates to an enquiry.

Hi every one, thanks again for your help, I phoned Kew today,
the chap I spoke to in the section that deals with medal cards printed it off and
took a look at it, he said that it looks as though Frederick never left the UK, and for him to receive a war medal he would have had to have went abroad, even if just there 1 day or hours he would have still received it.
but he could have been ill or had something that prevented him going abroad, the medal card would have been produced for him anyway in preparation for any medals he would have received,
and the documents to the ref number no longer exist.
they only way to tell is from his service records, which would mean a trip to Kew.
or get someone to search on my behalf, or Kew could get one of there researchers to look but it is £15 per 15 Min's = £1 per min  :o
thank you all for your help

It looks like you have just got to the beginning of your mystery as regards what happened to Frederick.

A visit/search at Kew might turn up trumps or might not.  It kinda leaves you questioning just why he did not 'go abroad' to war.  Maybe someone will offer you some explanation or help.  :(
